From the Panel to the Planters: How a Landscape Lighting Circuit Actually Gets Built at Toledo
Homeowners and property managers usually experience landscape lighting as a finished picture: a row of bollards glowing evenly along a walkway at dusk. What they rarely see is the actual path the electricity takes to get there, starting at a distribution panel indoors and ending at a fixture set in poured concrete outside. Our team recently walked that entire path on our Toledo project in the GTA, and it is a good opportunity to explain what is actually involved in wiring landscape lighting correctly from end to end.
Starting at the Panel, Not the Fixture
Most conversations about landscape lighting start with the fixtures: what style of bollard, what color temperature, how far apart. Those decisions matter, but none of them are the first step. The first step happens at the distribution panel, where every circuit in a building starts.
On this project, that meant working from a panel with a full set of labelled circuits, each one identified, organized, and dedicated to a specific load. Landscape and exterior lighting circuits get their own dedicated breakers rather than being tapped off whatever circuit happens to be nearby, because exterior lighting needs to be independently switched, independently protected, and easy to isolate for future maintenance without shutting down anything else in the building. A clean, well labelled panel is not cosmetic. It is what makes every piece of troubleshooting or future work faster and safer for the next electrician who opens that panel, including us.
Getting the Circuit Outside: Conduit Assembly on Site
Once a circuit leaves the panel, it has to physically get to where the fixture will live, and for anything running underground or through poured concrete, that means conduit. On site at Toledo, our crew hand assembled conduit sections and fittings, piece by piece, sized and cut for the specific run each fixture required.
This is slower and more deliberate work than it looks. Every coupling has to seat fully, every joint has to be secure enough to survive being encased in concrete permanently, and the conduit has to be positioned at the exact height and angle needed to line up with the base of the fixture once the slab is poured and cured. There is no adjusting a conduit stub after the concrete sets, which is why this stage gets done carefully the first time rather than quickly.
Running Conduit Across a Reinforced Slab
The Toledo site included a poured concrete slab reinforced with a rebar grid, the kind of hardscape base built to support foot traffic, precast concrete planters, and long term outdoor use. Our conduit runs had to be routed through and secured to that rebar grid before the pour, which means coordinating directly with the timeline of the concrete crew rather than working in isolation.
Securing conduit to rebar keeps it from shifting during the pour itself, which is one of the more common ways underground electrical work goes wrong on a job site. A conduit run that moves even a few inches during a concrete pour can end up misaligned with the fixture location it was meant to feed, turning a clean installation into a repair job. We tie every run down before the pour crew arrives, not after.
Why the Panel and the Fixture Have to Be Planned Together
The reason we walk this whole path in one piece, rather than treating the panel and the fixture as two separate jobs, is that decisions made at the panel directly affect what is possible at the fixture end, and the reverse is also true. Circuit capacity, wire gauge, and breaker sizing all have to account for the actual run length and load of the fixtures being installed. Get that wrong at the panel stage and you either undersize a circuit that cannot handle the load, or you oversize it in a way that adds unnecessary cost. Planning the full circuit, from breaker to bollard, before any conduit goes in the ground is what keeps a project like Toledo on schedule and on budget.
What This Means for Multi-Unit and Landscape Projects Across the GTA
Projects with extensive site lighting, whether a multi-unit development, a commercial property, or a larger residential build, need this kind of end to end planning more than a single home with a few pathway lights. More fixtures mean more circuits, more coordination with other trades pouring concrete or grading landscaping, and more value in getting the panel organized correctly from the start so the system is easy to maintain for years after our crew leaves the site.
